After learning the trade in his father’s store, George James Coles opened the “Coles Variety Store” in 1914 in Melbourne. The business expanded through the years, and in 1958 incorporated food retailing with the acquisition of 54 John Connell Dickins grocery stores. The following year Coles also bought the Beilby’s chain, and 265 Matthews Thompson grocery stores the year after that.
In 1960 the company opened its first supermarket under the Dickins name. In 1962 the name was changed to Coles New World. By 1973 Coles owned and operated stores in all Australian capital cities.
In 1991 the stores were rebranded as Coles Supermarkets, and in 1998 shortened it to its current name, Coles.
In 2008 Wesfarmers purchased Coles Group Limited, although the two demerged in 2018.
The company added their own private-label clothing to their inventory in 2011.
