Its initial growth was slow, with 14 stores across Victoria and Queensland trading under the brand name Mighty Muir by 1992, when Ian and his son Andrew renamed the chain of stores "The Good Guys". Later on, a strong advertising campaign in 1998 resulted in increased sales, driving rapid expansion of stores across the country. Years later, by 2009, the chain had grown to 89 stores across Australia and in 2016 the company had 101 stores.
Over the years, The Good Guys has grown successfully, receiving the initial Choice award for best retailer in 2010 and the annual Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Award for 2011 in the furniture/electronics retail category.
